Spring Home Safety Checklist
Spring is finally here, and as we tidy up our yards and homes, it’s the perfect time to take a
few extra steps to ensure your property remains safe and secure. After a long Alberta
winter, a seasonal check-in can help prevent issues and improve your home’s overall
security. Here are some simple but effective tips to include as part of your spring cleaning
and maintenance routine.
Test Your Security Devices
Check all door, window, glass break, and motion sensors to make sure they are working
properly. Spring is a great time to replace batteries in security devices to avoid interruptions
in protection.
Inspect and Clean Cameras
Wipe down security camera lenses with a microfiber cloth for a clear view. As landscaping
begins to grow, make sure new foliage isn’t blocking camera sightlines.
Update Exterior Lighting
Replace any burnt-out or broken exterior bulbs. Adding motion-sensor lighting is a great
way to deter unwanted activity and improve visibility around entrances and darker areas of
your property.
Check Doors and Windows
Inspect locks on all windows and doors and replace any that are worn or damaged. Keep
windows locked—especially those at ground level—even when you’re home.
Secure Garages and Sheds
As gardening season begins, remember to lock garages, sheds, and side gates. Tools and
equipment are valuable and can also be used to gain entry if left unsecured.
Protect Your Vehicles
Remove garage door openers and valuables from vehicles parked in your driveway to
reduce the risk of theft.
Tidy Up Landscaping
Trim bushes and trees near windows and doors to reduce hiding spots and improve
sightlines around your home.
Improve Property Visibility
Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the road so emergency services can
locate your home quickly if needed.
Lock Away Tools and Equipment
Secure ladders, tools, and patio furniture when not in use to prevent them from being
repurposed for unauthorized access.
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries, and remember that
units older than 10 years should be replaced entirely.
Prevent Spring Flooding
Clear gutters, downspouts, and drains to help prevent water damage as snow melts and
spring rains arrive.
Connect with Your Neighbors
Getting to know your neighbors can be an added layer of security—especially when you’re
away for extended periods. Always report suspicious activity to local police.
Taking a little time this spring to review these areas can go a long way toward keeping your
home safe and giving you peace of mind throughout the year.
